Adding and Subtracting Mixed Numbers

Adding and subtracting mixed numbers is very similar to adding and subtracting fractions. First we:
1. Find a common denominator for the fractions
2. If necessary, ungroup a whole number, then subtract the fractions OR simply add the fractions
3. Subtract or add the whole numbers

Adding and Subtracting Fraction with Unlike Denominators

We have been working very hard adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators. So far, we have made great progress. The following videos will take you through examples using models.

Fractions as Division

When observing fractions, we see that the numerator and denominator are separated by a fraction bar (ex: 3/5). In this example, the fraction bar between 3 and 5 means "divided by". So, this fraction can represent the real world situation of 3 pizzas being shared equally between 5 people; 3 boxes of paper being divided among 5 classrooms; or 3 packs of gum being shared by 5 friends. Therefore, each person will receive 3/5 of whatever is being shared or divided.
